MINDEN, NV (March 23, 2004) – Bently Nevada today announced the release of their Snapshot™ IS instrument, the company’s first intrinsically safe portable data collector. Intended for use gathering condition monitoring data as part of a Predictive Maintenance (PdM) program, the instrument can be used in hazardous areas up to and including Zone 0 and Division 1 without the need for a hot work permit.

A true palm-sized package weighing only 1.5 lbs., it is the industry’s only instrument in this size and weight class that combines the Microsoft* Windows* CE operating system, intrinsically safe design, and the ability to collect full waveforms and spectral content for oscilloscope-like and spectrum analyzer capabilities. The single-channel instrument accepts two simultaneous input signals, one for dynamic vibration and one for phase or speed. It is fully compatible with Bently Nevada’s System 1® condition monitoring software and is the latest addition to the company’s Snapshot family of route-based portable data collection instruments, joining the larger two-channel Snapshot CE instrument as well as a “lite” version called Snapshot Clipboard that runs on a variety of off-the-shelf pocket PC devices.

Portable data collection instruments have long been used to collect vibration, temperature, electric current signatures, and other condition monitoring data for assessing the mechanical and electrical health of plant operating assets. While a large variety of commercially available data collectors exist, intrinsically safe designs have meant users either accept a larger, heavier device, or sacrifice the ability to collect waveform data – generally considered “must-have” for meaningful predictive maintenance. The Snapshot IS instrument represents an industry first, combining small size, intrinsic safety, and full waveform capture functionality.

According to Rick Bauer, Product Line Manager for Bently Nevada’s portable offerings, Snapshot IS delivers a number of important benefits. “It’s a full-function single-channel instrument,” says Bauer, “rather than one forced to trade small size and intrinsic safety for marginal functionality.” Continues Bauer, “Even customers who don’t require an intrinsically safe package will want to use it when a single-channel instrument meets their needs – the size, weight, and functionality make it an excellent fit for many PdM applications.” Complete integration with the company’s System 1 software is also a big plus, according to Bauer. “Regardless of how customers collect data, System 1 integrates Bently Nevada’s online and offline systems into a single platform for assessing asset condition. That means lower costs of ownership, fewer systems to learn and support, and easier ability to augment and compare data, regardless of its source.”

Complete information is available on the company’s website at www.bently.com, including a comprehensive datasheet with product specifications and an informative 5-page article detailing product features and comparing it to other members of the Snapshot family.
