MINDEN, 12 NOVEMBER 2002 - Looking to maximize synergies and share best practices in software development among all GE Power Systems (GEPS) business components, a group of software development experts from around GEPS gathered at Bently Nevada headquarters in Minden, Nevada, on 9 October. It was the second meeting for the group, known as the Systems and Asset Management Software (SAMS) Technology Board. The need for the SAMS board emerged over the last few years as GEPS acquired several businesses with strong proficiencies in software development. A framework was needed in which they could synchronize their efforts and help one another. "It's a complex but necessary process," says Brian Palmer, Bently Nevada President. "Plant Asset Management is a key part of GEPS' strategy for future growth, and many of the businesses and product development groups within GEPS have technology and expertise that can help us succeed. These groups have a great opportunity to capitalize on their new corporate relationship to one another and to learn to work as a distributed, but coordinated, team. I'm extremely pleased that SAMS was formed and totally supportive of their efforts. We all benefit when we work together, and this level of teaming across businesses represents a 'best practice' within GE." The mission of SAMS is "To provide high-quality, world-class software solutions to GE Power Systems and customers around the globe to help them manage their assets, equipment, plants, and systems." The board is made up of representatives from a range of GEPS businesses. Some, like GE Network Solutions, focus entirely on software development; while others, like Bently Nevada, offer a mix of hardware and software products. Other participants include the GE Global Research Center, GE Energy Services Technology, IDAX, KVB-Enertec, GE-Enter, Praxis, and GE Substation Automation Solutions. "This is a tremendous benefit for our customers and our business," concludes Palmer. "The efforts of the SAMS board will ultimately provide our customers greater flexibility and value by offering a variety of modular software solutions that can be mixed and matched to meet specific customer needs."
