MINDEN, 10 JUNE 2002 - Continuing its efforts to recognize the achievements of students involved in science and engineering, Bently Nevada sponsored a "Special Award" category in the 52nd Annual Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, held in Louisville, Kentucky, 3-17 May 2002. The company sponsored three awards for entries that demonstrated originality in specifying a research problem or defining an engineering project, as well as creativity in executing the project and utilizing engineering principals/methods to solve the problem. The winners for 2002 included Benjamin Saur and Diana Maichin of Marlborough, Massachusetts, who accepted the first place ($1,000) award for their project, "Using Shielding to Decrease Non-Ionizing Radiation in Cellular Phones." Second place ($500) was awarded to Bradley Mathews, from Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa, for his project, "New Intelligent Refrigeration Technology: Research, Design, and Testing." Third place ($250) was awarded to Laura Wong of Ewing, New Jersey, for "Where Am I? Minimizing Positional Error While Navigating and Mapping Using a Cooperative Robotic System."

Representing Bently Nevada for the special award category were four engineers: Shirley D’Souza, Mike Hulse, Kristen Johnson, and John Kimpel. The engineers traveled to Louisville to judge the students’ projects that qualified for the particular category. "The experience was absolutely fantastic," said Johnson. "ISEF began as an organization that sought to recognize precollege students and encourage them to conduct scientific research. Today, not only does ISEF recognize the students for their incredible work, but offers great financial rewards to help get these bright students through college." D’Souza added, "One thing that occurred to me right away when we began judging is the sheer caliber of the projects. These students are extremely intelligent, talented, and their projects were very advanced. They were also well-represented, internationally. The Fair was attended by students from every corner of the globe, including countries in Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa. This diversity made the Fair an excellent experience for all."

Originally founded by Science Service in 1950, the ISEF hosts 1,200 students from 40 countries to compete for over $2 million dollars in scholarships, tuition grants, internships, scientific field trips, and a grand prize trip to attend the Nobel Prize Ceremonies in Stockholm, Sweden. An almost equal number of professionals, including academia, business, government, and volunteer organizations, devote their time to interview, judge, and award the participating students. This is the only world-wide scientific project competition for students in the 9th-12th grades.
